Djokovic Crumbles Under Pressure: ‘No Excuses’ for Shock Exit Against Van de Zandschulp
Novak Djokovic Bounced from Indian Wells by Botic van de Zandschulp, Leaves Door Open for Excuses
The five-time Indian Wells champion was sent packing from the California desert on Saturday, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, 37, refused to make excuses for his poor performance, admitting it was a “bad day at the office.”
Despite retiring from his Australian Open semi-final against Alexander Zverev with a hamstring injury, Djokovic’s movement appeared unaffected on a sun-soaked day on Stadium One court. However, his usual high level of tennis was mostly absent, as he committed a blizzard of errors, allowing van de Zandschulp to capitalize and take the first set. The Serbian great did raise his game to grab the second set, but van de Zandschulp refused to back down, claiming the decider with a convincing 6-1 scoreline.
Djokovic attributed his struggles to the resurfaced courts at Indian Wells, which he found difficult to read due to the varying bounce of the ball. “The difference between the centre court and the other courts is immense,” he explained. “The ball is bouncing on the centre court higher than some of the highest clay courts, to be honest. Just struggled a lot with that. Couldn’t find the rhythm.” He added that he will seek the counsel of his long-time rival-turned-coach, Andy Murray, before deciding his next steps, which may include playing the second leg of the “Sunshine Double” at the upcoming Miami Open.
This loss marks a third consecutive defeat for Djokovic, following his withdrawal from the Australian Open and an opening-round defeat at the Qatar Open. The three-time Grand Slam champion is now on a three-match losing streak, a stark contrast to his previous dominance in the sport. “Things are different for me the last couple of years,” he acknowledged. “I’ve been struggling to play on the desired level. Every now and then, I have a couple of good tournaments, but mostly it’s a real challenge. So, it is what it is. I guess nothing can prepare you for that moment; you have to experience it and try to deal with it in the best possible way.”
As Djokovic navigates this challenging period, he will likely have to draw upon his vast experience and mental toughness to overcome the setbacks and rediscover his form. With his loss at Indian Wells, the big question for his fans will be: when will we see the Djokovic of old, the one who dominated the sport with his exceptional athleticism, strategic play, and clutch performances?
