Mumbai Metro One Set to Introduce Shorter Trips to Ease Congestion

In a bid to ease congestion and accommodate a surge in daily commuters, Mumbai Metro One, the city’s first elevated Metro corridor, is set to introduce shorter trips between Ghatkopar and Andheri railway stations during peak hours. The new arrangement will reduce the existing route, formerly running from Ghatkopar to Versova, to only between Ghatkopar and Andheri. This decision is expected to benefit the 88% of passengers who travel on this particular route, which is concentrated in and around Andheri, a hub for many offices.

The new shorter trips will operate from 8:30 am to 10:30 am in the morning and from 6 pm to 8 pm in the evening, with a trial conducted on March 6 to test the system and gather feedback from commuters. A senior officials from Mumbai Metro One confirmed the development, stating that the response has been largely positive so far.

According to the data, close to 12% of passengers travel beyond Andheri to Versova, while the remaining 88% travel within the Ghatkopar-Andheri stretch. With the introduction of these shorter trips, the metro’s carrying capacity is expected to increase by 5,000 passengers per hour during peak times, resulting in an 8% rise in the number of passengers during these periods. Currently, the metro transports around 60,000 passengers at peak hours, which will now increase to 68,000.

The revised schedule is expected to bring about a significant improvement in frequency, from every 3 minutes and 40 seconds to every 3 minutes and 15 seconds. This is a major boost for commuters, providing them with more frequent access to the metro during peak hours. The metro currently operates 430 daily trips with 16 rakes, and the new arrangement will not change the overall number of trips but will optimize the frequency for better efficiency.

In related news, the loan taken by Mumbai Metro One has been transferred to the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL), effective December last year. The move is part of the company’s efforts to restructure the loan and achieve better financial stability, taking into account the metro’s high-interest payments. The MMRDA had earlier withdrawn its plan to take over the metro, paving the way for NARCL to step in.

With the new development, commuters can expect a smoother and more efficient travel experience on the Mumbai Metro One, making it an attractive alternative to congested city roads during peak hours. As the city continues to grow and evolve, the metro is poised to play a vital role in easing traffic congestion and improving air quality.
