Spotlight on Lunglei: Banana’s Unlikely Star Raises the Banzarima Bloom!
As the northeast Indian state of Mizoram continues to promote its unique products and initiatives, the town of Lunglei is witnessing a surge in the popularity of banana and its various by-products. Spearheaded by the Centre’s “One District, One Product” (ODOP) program, the district’s growers and entrepreneurs are working together to popularize banana as a key agricultural product.
At a recent function organized at the Thuamluaia Mual football ground as part of the Chapchar Kut festival celebrations, Health Minister Lalrinpuii received a present of banana and its various products, demonstrating the fruit’s potential for growth and profitability. The event also featured a stall set up by the district horticulture office, showcasing ODOP’s focus on banana and its by-products, which has significantly boost the morale of banana growers in the region.
Under the ODOP program, local entrepreneurs are not only cultivating banana but also processing and selling a range of products, including banana chips, cakes, and other value-added items. This initiative is expected to not only increase the income of farmers but also promote the local economy and sustainable development. The program is also receiving support from the state government, which is providing necessary infrastructure and resources to help farmers improve their yield and quality.
Sources from the district horticulture office confirmed that the response to the ODOP program has been overwhelmingly positive, with many farmers reporting significant increases in their income. “The ODOP program has not only helped us increase our yield but also provided us with a platform to market our products effectively,” said a local farmer, who wished to remain anonymous. “We are now able to access new markets and connect with buyers, which has significantly improved our livelihood.”
The success of the ODOP program is a testament to the potential of the banana industry in Mizoram, and the state government’s efforts to promote local entrepreneurship and sustainable development. As the program continues to grow, it is likely to have a positive impact on the local economy, empowering farmers and entrepreneurs to build a better future for themselves and their communities.
