Sikkim Ceilings International Women’s Day Celebrations: A Call for Change

Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang marked the occasion of International Women’s Day by emphasizing the significance of women’s empowerment and gender equality during the state-level celebrations. As he extended his greetings to the women of Sikkim, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering their welfare and progress.

Tamang stressed that a man’s success is often attributed to the support of women in his life, underlining the need to shift societal perception towards women. He highlighted the progress made, with women now serving in the armed forces, driving vehicles, and holding leadership positions. He drew attention to the fact that even the President of the country, Droupadi Murmu, is a woman, illustrating the changing landscape.

However, Tamang also pointed out the existing bias, where men’s achievements are widely celebrated, while women’s contributions often go unrecognized. “If a man stands alone at night, he is called brave. If a woman does the same, she is judged. This mindset must change,” he asserted.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) government has introduced several initiatives to empower women and improve their socio-economic conditions. These include financial assistance for mothers, a higher amount compared to other states, and a scheme providing free sanitary napkins in all schools. The Aam Sahyog Yojana offers four free LPG cylinders annually to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

Furthermore, the Sishu Samriddhi Yojana and Mero Rukh Mero Santati programs involve planting 108 saplings for every child born in Sikkim, promoting environmental conservation. The Mero Bato, Mero Bot initiative is a community-driven tree plantation drive by the Forest Department. The government has also reduced the waiting period for widow pensions, benefiting single mothers and widows.

Tamang emphasized the importance of women’s participation in economic activities, particularly in government tenders. He announced that women can now bid for projects up to ₹10 crore without requiring a Tender Deposit Receipt (TDR), and 50% of tenders are reserved for women. “On International Women’s Day, let us change our mindset and support women in every sphere of life,” he concluded.

In conclusion, the Sikkim Chief Minister’s address at the state-level International Women’s Day celebrations served as a call to action, urging society to reassess its stance on women’s empowerment and gender equality.
