Urgent Appeal: Statehood Revives Call to Elevate Khelhoshe Polytechnic to top-Rated Engineering College in Nagaland
Call to Action: Upgrade Khelhoshe Polytechnic into a Full-Fledged Engineering College
The long-awaited upgrade of Khelhoshe Polytechnic, Atoizu (KPA) to a full-fledged engineering college has resurfaced, gaining momentum with stakeholders pressing the Nagaland government to expedite the transition. The institution, established in 1972, has a rich legacy in shaping skilled professionals, but its limited diploma-level education has left students seeking engineering degrees outside the state, causing financial strain and brain drain.
A formal representation to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has urged the government to revisit a 2007 Cabinet decision to introduce a Civil Engineering Degree Course and eventually upgrade KPA to an engineering college. However, the plan remains unimplemented for over a decade, despite meeting the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) criteria for upgradation. As an institution with a minimum of five years of existence, KPA already possesses the necessary infrastructure and faculty, making the transition viable with minimal investment.
The petitioners argue that the delay is a missed opportunity for Nagaland’s technical education sector, emphasizing that upgradation would not only benefit aspiring engineers but also contribute to the state’s economic growth and self-sufficiency in technical education. The lack of an engineering college in Nagaland has led to a growing concern over the state’s higher education needs, with pressure mounting on the government to act on its commitment.
"Not only does the upgradation meet the AICTE criteria, but KPA’s five-decade legacy and existing infrastructure make the transition feasible with minimal investment," said a representative from one of the stakeholder organizations. "It’s a missed opportunity for Nagaland’s technical education sector, and we urge the government to implement the previously approved plan without further delay." The advocates are pushing for immediate action, stressing that the upgradation would not only benefit aspiring engineers but also contribute to the state’s economic growth and self-sufficiency in technical education.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the Nagaland government will heed the call to upgrade KPA, providing much-needed relief to the state’s students and setting the stage for future progress in the technical education sector.
