Empowering Women, Elevating Societies: Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills Celebrates International Women’s Day
Meghalaya’s South West Garo Hills Celebrates International Women’s Day with a Focus on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
The South West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya marked International Women’s Day with a comprehensive program, emphasizing gender equality and women’s empowerment. Held at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati, the event drew together local officials, healthcare workers, and community members, all focused on the theme "Accelerate Action – Moving Towards Gender Equality."
According to Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, Meghalaya has made significant strides in literacy rates and female workforce participation, given its unique matrilineal society. However, she highlighted the persistence of challenges facing women in traditional leadership positions, who continue to struggle economically, despite having legal authority. "Even female nokmas who hold land rights often struggle financially," Nayak noted, citing a pressing need for support and intervention.
The event featured educational sessions on critical issues, including a presentation on gender-based violence by TD Ch Marak, LCPO, and a discussion on women’s safety by Additional Superintendent of Police SN Marak. A ceremony recognized outstanding women, including Lastmania T Sangma, the Brand Ambassador for the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative, who has earned 17 medals in Taekwondo championships. Healthcare workers from Gopinathkilla and Rongsangbagre Sub Centres, as well as PWD self-help group members Trishna Ch Marak and Silse N Sangma, received acknowledgment for their contributions.
The celebration incorporated cultural performances and competitive activities, with Japang VO and Chengkom Nokatchi VO vying for top honors in a tug-of-war competition. Deputy Commissioner Nayak demonstrated her commitment to women’s health by participating in free blood pressure and glucose screenings offered at the venue, urging women to take advantage of these preventive services and reminding female health workers to prioritize their own well-being.
The event, organized jointly by the District Social Welfare Office, Health & Family Welfare Department, and Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society, also provided economic opportunities through a marketplace for women entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their products, promoting empowerment and highlighting the district’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
