In a disturbing development in France’s most notorious sexual crime case, Caroline Darian, the daughter of convicted rapist Dominique Pelicot, has filed a police complaint accusing her father of drugging and raping her. This follows his conviction last December for orchestrating the drugging and rape of his wife, Gisèle Pelicot, over a decade, inviting dozens of men into their southern France home to assault her alongside him. In a case that captivated the nation, 50 other men were found guilty of raping or sexually assaulting Ms. Pelicot while she was incapacitated, reigniting national discussions about rape culture, consent, and the alarming misuse of sleep and anti-anxiety medication, a tactic referred to in France as ‘chemical submission.’
During last year’s trial, Darian confronted Dominique Pelicot, asserting that he had also drugged and raped her, allegations he vehemently denied. Despite these claims, prosecutors did not initially charge Pelicot with crimes against his daughter. However, Darian’s new complaint will now prompt an investigative judge or prosecutor to assess whether sufficient evidence exists to pursue new charges against her father.
Dominique Pelicot’s horrifying acts were further underscored by the discovery of about 20,000 photos and videos on his devices, documenting the numerous assaults on his wife, enabling law enforcement to identify additional perpetrators. Among these images were unsettling photos of his daughter, captured sleeping in underwear she claimed wasn’t hers, with bedding disturbed and lights on. Pelicot’s explanations for these photos varied during the trial, at times denying authorship, disputing their subject, or claiming coercion through blackmail.
Disappointed by the lack of thorough investigation into her claims last year, Darian, writing under a pseudonym, has expressed her determination to seek justice. “I hoped to get the truth,” she stated in an interview earlier this week. “I can’t stop there. It’s not principle, because my case was not investigated as it should have been.” Her attorney, Florence Rault, believes critical evidence was overlooked, suggesting, “There are elements that were absolutely not brought to light.”
Béatrice Zavarro, representing Dominique Pelicot, acknowledged the new complaint but withheld further comment until she could review the detailed charges, which reportedly include rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and drugging against one’s will.
Beyond these current allegations, Dominique Pelicot is embroiled in two other cold case indictments: the 1991 rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman and the 1999 attempted rape of a 19-year-old, both murdered while working as real estate agents. According to court records from last year’s trial, Pelicot confessed to drugging one of the victims with ether but denied involvement in her murder.
