US Compels Global Outrage: Travel Ban Alert Issued Against Pakistanis After Islamabad’s ‘Thank You’ to Trump

Here is the rewritten article:

President Trump is on the verge of issuing a travel ban that may bar people from Pakistan and Afghanistan from entering the United States, according to sources familiar with the matter. This move comes after the administration launched a review of countries’ national security and vetting risks. The ban is expected to be released as early as next week, citing concerns over the potential threat to US national security.

The potential ban is reminiscent of Trump’s previous travel ban on travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, which was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018. The latest move could impact tens of thousands of Afghans who have been cleared for resettlement in the US as refugees or on special immigrant visas, potentially leaving them at risk of persecution by the Taliban.

The development coincides with Trump’s recent address to the joint Congress in Capitol Hill, where he praised Pakistan for its role in the extradition of Mohammad Sharifullah, who was allegedly involved in the planning of the deadly Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan in 2021. The bombing resulted in the deaths of 13 US troops and 170 Afghans.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, also thanked the US for acknowledging Islamabad’s efforts in arresting Sharifullah, saying, “We thank US President Donald Trump for acknowledging and appreciating Pakistan’s role and support in counter-terrorism efforts across the region, in the context of Pakistan Security Forces’ recent apprehension of ISKP’s top-tier operational commander, Shareefullah, who is an Afghanistan National.”

However, the travel ban is likely to have far-reaching implications for countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan, which have been grappling with violent Islamist militancy. In recent weeks, Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist attacks, including a February 2023 suicide bombing that killed six security personnel in the northwestern region.

The US President’s move is a response to the January 2023 executive order that requires intensified security vetting of foreigners seeking admission to the US, with the aim of detecting national security threats. The administration has also directed cabinet members to submit a list of countries whose travel should be partially or fully suspended due to inadequate vetting and screening information.

As the US reviews countries’ national security and vetting risks, Afghanistan and Pakistan are likely to be included in the recommended list of countries for a complete travel ban, according to sources. Pakistan is also facing violent terrorist attacks, including a recent twin suicide bombing at a military base in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, resulting in the deaths of six security personnel.

The US-Pakistan relationship has been strained in recent years, with tensions arising from disagreements over border issues, including the construction of a border wall along the Durand Line, a 2,400-kilometer long border drawn by the British in 1896 and disputed by Kabul.
