Tensions Rise as Taiwan Calls for Beijing to Show Restraint Amid Increasing Chinese Defense Spending
Taiwan Urges Calm as China Plans Boost to Military Spending
Taipei, Taiwan – In a move that is sparking concern in the region, China has announced plans to increase its military spending by 7.2% in 2025, according to local media reports. In response, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council is calling for "reason and self-restraint" as Beijing continues to assert its military might.
The Chinese military has been conducting drills in the seas off Taiwan, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Australia, which has raised concerns about navigational safety and regional tension. The Chinese government has submitted a draft budget to the national legislature for 1.78 trillion yuan (approximately $246 billion) in defense spending for the 2025 fiscal year, a significant increase from previous years.
The move is seen as a stern warning to Taiwan, which is already engaged in a delicate diplomatic balancing act. The United States, a key ally of Taiwan, has urged the island nation to increase its defense spending to deter war with China. Elbridge Colby, a former Pentagon official, recommended that Taiwan allocate around 10% of its Gross Domestic Product towards defense, a significant increase from its current level.
Taiwan’s Vice President, Lai Ching-te, has emphasized the country’s commitment to defending itself and has called on allies and like-minded nations to uphold global peace and prosperity. "Taiwan is indispensable to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region," she stated. The country is also urging other nations to join it in promoting peace and stability in the region.
The Chinese government, meanwhile, has reiterated its stance on "reunification" with Taiwan, stating that it will "firmly advance" this goal while opposing external interference. The Chinese Communist Party’s annual Government Work Report has also highlighted significant progress in the country’s national defense and military affairs, with plans to further advance military training and develop new combat capabilities.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, Taiwan is seeking to balance its relations with China while maintaining its sovereignty and security. The international community is closely watching the situation, with many expressing concern over the growing military presence of China in the region. As the stakes are high, one thing is clear: the global community must come together to promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
