According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the month-long reprieve was granted at the request of the “big 3” automakers, which had sought an exemption to avoid being at an economic disadvantage. “The President is giving them an exemption for one month, so they’re not at an economic disadvantage,” Leavitt said at the daily press briefing. However, she emphasized that the measure is temporary and not a permanent reprieve from tariffs.

Ford, one of the affected companies, welcomed the move, saying it would “continue to speak with the administration about the issues the industry is facing.”
