Mother’s Plea for Justice: Victim’s Family Seeks Fair Probe in Calcutta High Court
The Grief of a Mother: Calcutta High Court Seeks Fair Probe in Sutandra Chattopadhyay’s Death
In a shocking turn of events, the mother of late Sutandra Chattopadhyay, a young dancer and event management professional, has taken her fight for justice to the Calcutta High Court. The mother, Tanushree Chattopadhyay, has approached the court seeking a fair probe in the matter, claiming that her daughter’s death was a “virtual murder” and not an accident, as maintained by the investigating officials. The petition has been admitted by the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh and is expected to come up for hearing soon.
According to Tanushree, her daughter’s death occurred on February 24 on the National Highway at Panagarh in West Burdwan district, after the driver of the vehicle she was traveling in, attempted to escape from a group of drunk youths who were chasing them in another vehicle. Fellow passengers have given statements to both the police and media outlets, corroborating Tanushree’s version of events. However, the investigation agency has reportedly claimed that the accident was caused by reckless overtaking, leading to the driver losing control of the vehicle.
Tanushree has been vocal about her suspicions, claiming that the investigating officials are shielding the accused, possibly due to their influential connections. In her petition, she has alleged that her daughter’s death was a result of a pre-planned conspiracy and that the accused, including the driver of the chasing vehicle, were drunk and making lewd remarks about her daughter.
The investigation has led to the arrest of Babul Yama, the owner-cum-driver of the chasing vehicle, who has a criminal record. He was arrested on February 27, just three days after the incident, and has been linked to a 2024 case involving the sale of smuggled automobile spare parts. However, he was released on bail shortly after.
This case has sparked outrage, with many questioning the handling of the investigation and the government’s decision to release the accused on bail. The Calcutta High Court’s intervention is likely to bring new hope for justice for Sutandra’s family, who have been fighting for answers since her tragic death.
