Assam Falls Behind in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals, Centre for Science and Environment Reports

Assam’s journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has hit a roadblock, with the state failing to meet even half the target in 42% of assessed indicators, according to the Centre for Science and Environment’s (CSE) State of States report. The report highlights a dismal performance across various SDGs, including Quality Education, Zero Hunger, and Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

The state’s poor performance is shocking, with Assam ranking 31st among 36 states in achieving less than 60% of the targets in critical SDGs that ensure a dignified life for citizens. The report points out that the state has achieved only 57.2% of the targets in these key SDGs, indicative of a pressing need for action. The state’s performance in SDGs like No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, and Decent Work and Economic Growth has been particularly concerning.

In a region where poverty remains a significant issue, Assam’s ranking 14th in SDG 1 (No Poverty) with a score of 75 points is disheartening. The state’s performance in SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) is equally worrying, with a score of 47 points, ranking 24th nationally. The state’s education system also leaves much to be desired, with Assam ranking 32nd in SDG 4 (Quality Education) with a score of just 41.

The report further reveals that the state’s performance in achieving Gender Equality, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and Climate Action, Life on Land, and Life Below Water SDGs has been mixed, with scores ranging between 42% to 75%. While Assam has achieved 72.6% of the targets in SDGs related to infrastructure, such as Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Sustainable Cities and Communities, there is a clear need for concerted efforts to address the state’s numerous challenges.

While the data highlights the challenges facing Assam, it also serves as a call to action for the government, civil society, and other stakeholders to work together to achieve the SDGs. By sharing knowledge, expertise, and resources, we can build a better future for the people of Assam and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world.
