Assam’s Reserved Forest Land Under Encroachment: Minister Reveals Alarming Figures
Assam’s Forest Minister, Chandra Mohan Patowary, has revealed shocking statistics about the extent of encroachment on reserved forest land in the state. In a statement made in the assembly, Patowary disclosed that over 3.35 lakh hectares of reserved forest land in Assam is under encroachment, including by neighboring states and others.
According to the minister, over 2.5 lakh hectares of reserved forest land has been encroached by locals, while a significant 83,811 hectares has been occupied by neighboring states. This alarming situation has led to a total of 3,35,322.60 hectares of reserved forest land under encroachment, Patowary said in response to a question from Asom Gana Parishad MLA Pradip Hazarika.
In a bid to address the issue, the government has undertaken eviction drives as per the Assam Forest Act, 1891, and regular patrolling is conducted by forest guards. Patowary reported that a total of 10,905.859 hectares has been cleared of encroachment from 2021-22 till December 2024.
The minister also informed that there are currently 323 reserved forests in the state, which highlights the need for immediate action to protect and preserve these valuable natural resources. The ongoing efforts to evict encroachers and restore the reserved forests are a crucial step in this direction.
The encroachment of reserved forest land is a pressing concern in Assam, and the government’s actions to address this issue are laudable. It is essential to continue the momentum of evictions, patrolling, and restoration of these forests to preserve the state’s natural heritage for future generations. As the situation stands, the ongoing efforts to reclaim and protect Assam’s reserved forest land are a testament to the government’s commitment to preserving the state’s natural beauty and resources.
