Shillong (Umroi) Airport Expansion Complete: A Major Boost for Regional Connectivity

The expansion of Shillong (Umroi) Airport has reached a major milestone, with a total of 461.73 acres now under its purview. This significant development, coupled with the introduction of new flight routes, marks a major advancement in the region’s aviation infrastructure, expected to enhance connectivity and boost economic activities.

According to Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who addressed the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Budget Session today, the airport’s current runway measures 1,829 meters, accommodating operations for ATR-72 and Q-400 aircraft. The airport is currently operating flights connecting to Delhi, Kolkata, Imphal, Pasighat, and Lengpui, with further expansion plans on the horizon.

The land acquisition process, which began before 1972 and continued through 2020, has been a complex and phased effort. A total of 416.16 acres has been designated for the airport proper, while 45.57 acres are allocated for the approach funnel. Dhar chronicled the land acquisition process, stating that 192 acres were acquired before 1972, an additional 192.16 acres were acquired in 2010, and 32 acres of Defense Land were acquired in 2017. Further acquisitions for the approach funnel took place in 2018 and 2020. The total expenditure for land acquisition stands at Rs 123,26,70,213.
