Barpeta’s Growing Market Shedding Its Unruly Image

In a significant transformation, the makeshift market outside Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital (FAAMCH) in Assam’s Barpeta is finally organized, thanks to the proactive efforts of local vendors. Around 50 stalls offering food, clothes, fruits, and vegetables have been providing livelihoods to nearly 500 people. In a remarkable show of initiative, the vendors have formed the FAAMC Temporary Market Committee (FTMC) to ensure cleanliness, order, and safety in the market.

The committee has been working tirelessly to set up proper entry points, maintain hygiene, regulate garbage disposal, and prevent illegal activities. To achieve these objectives, the FTMC has launched cleanliness drives, installed dustbins, and restricted the entry of new traders to prevent overcrowding. Recognizing these positive changes, a team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner Jayanta Bora recently visited the market and appreciated the improvements. The District Administration, in partnership with the municipality, has set up garbage removal services, with payment arrangements made to ensure the service continues, despite the market being outside municipal limits.

The vendor community is thrilled with the changes, with one market stall owner expressing satisfaction over the transformation. "This market used to be unorganized, but now it’s becoming organized. We are grateful to have a proper elected body to oversee its functioning," they said. The FTMC is now seeking recognition for the market as a permanent commercial hub, hoping to approach higher authorities to make this a reality.

In the meantime, the market continues to serve as a vital alternative to hospital canteens, meeting the needs of patients and visitors at FAAMCH. With its newly found organization, the market is poised to provide a better experience for all parties involved, while also promoting economic growth and development in the region.
