Assam Police Foiled: Ri-Bhoi Police Rescue University from Clandestine Raid by Assam Police Authority; Justice Prevails!
Ri-Bhoi Police Foil Assam Police’s Bid to Conduct Raid at USTM in Meghalaya
An ambitious attempt by the Assam police to conduct a raid at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) was scuttled on Friday, thanks to a prompt decision by the Ri-Bhoi police to deny them permission.
The development comes on the heels of the arrest of USTM’s chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque, in Assam’s Sribhumi district. The Assam police had been planning to conduct a raid at the university following Hoque’s arrest, which was made public by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who alleged that the academic institution was involved in a network that lured students with promises of high marks through "fraud means".
However, a team from the Assam police, led by an undisclosed number of officers, arrived at the Khanapara police station in Ri-Bhoi and approached the local authorities, requesting assistance to conduct the raid. However, Ri-Bhoi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vivekanand Singh Rathore refused to grant permission, citing concerns over law and order and the upcoming visit of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Meghalaya on Sunday.
Key Points:
- The Assam police sought to conduct a raid at USTM following the arrest of its chancellor, Mahbubul Hoque
- The Ri-Bhoi police denied permission, citing concerns over law and order and the upcoming visit of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Meghalaya
- The Assam police lacked the necessary legal authorization, including a search warrant from a court, to conduct the operation within Meghalaya’s jurisdiction
In a statement, Rathore emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the region remains peaceful, particularly in the face of significant events such as the finance minister’s visit. The decision to deny permission also underscores the requirement for legal authorization, as stipulated by the Meghalaya government, before conducting such operations within the state’s jurisdiction.
While the Assam police were left disappointed, the incident highlights the importance of adhering to legal procedures and maintaining a delicate balance between law enforcement and the need to preserve public order.
