Nationalists Slam BJP’s Rule in Manipur: ‘President’s Emergency Imposed Amidst Unmitigated Incompetence’
Manipur in Crisis: Congress Slams President’s Rule, Alleges Incompetent BJP Government
The Congress party has rejected the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur, citing the "incompetency of the BJP government" as the primary reason. Manipur Congress vice president Hareshwar Goshwami accused the government of mismanaging the state, leading to the unprecedented move.
The criticism comes as the President’s rule was imposed on February 13, just days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation, plunging the state into political uncertainty. The BJP, which has an absolute majority in the assembly, has been accused of being unable to form a stable government.
Goshwami blamed "disunity among BJP MLAs" for the crisis, stating that even if the party wins the next elections, it may not be able to form a government. He also expressed concern about the potential consequences of President’s rule, including "mass combing operations" and a threat to the state’s territorial integrity.
The state’s political crisis has been marked by ethnic violence, with over 250 people killed and thousands rendered homeless since May 2023. The violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups has been ongoing, with the government’s inability to stem the tide of violence.
Surrender of Arms and Amnesty
In a separate development, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has extended the deadline for the surrender of looted and illegal arms until March 6. The move comes amid demands from both hill and valley areas for additional time to surrender their weapons. Bhalla has assured that no punitive action will be taken against those who surrender their weapons within the extended period.
Key Statistics:
- Over 250 people have been killed in ethnic violence since May 2023
- Thousands have been rendered homeless
- More than 300 weapons have been surrendered by the public since the seven-day deadline ended
- The President’s rule was imposed on February 13
What’s Next?
As the situation in Manipur continues to unfold, the key question is what the President’s rule will bring. Will the state see a return to stability, or will the ongoing violence and political instability persist? Only time will tell.
