Shocking Scandal: USTM Chancellor and 5 Teachers Jailed for Exam Fraud – A Dark Day in Guwahati Education
In Silchar, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), Mahbubul Hoque, along with five others, were arrested and sent to judicial custody. This followed allegations of exam fraud related to the Central Public School (CPS) in the Sribhumi district. Sribhumi sub-divisional judicial magistrate Feng Liu denied bail and a police plea for a two-day remand, placing the arrested individuals in 14 days of judicial custody. Hoque was detained at his Guwahati residence, and the CPS teachers were arrested from Sribhumi.
The arrests came after more than 200 students from Goalpara district accused CPS of promising to help them pass their Class XII CBSE exams. The police can conduct further investigations while Hoque is in jail, as confirmed by the public prosecutor. A case was filed at the Patharkandi police station against Hoque, CPS principal Hiramoni Saikia, and teachers Bijoy Dutta, Rozak Ali, Imdadur Rahman, and Noman Ahmed, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighted the alleged exam fraud on social media, claiming USTM promised higher CBSE exam marks to students. Sarma also raised concerns about broader allegations of fake degrees and certificates being issued by USTM, including claims of selling PhDs without proper examinations. The arrest has sparked significant attention as these accusations challenge the integrity of USTM and its associated institutions, calling for a rigorous investigation to uphold educational standards.
The involvement of a prominent educational institution in such allegations of misconduct has triggered widespread concern, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the education sector.
