Former Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh asserted that the Congress is the only party capable of establishing a stable government and ensuring peace in Manipur. Speaking at a gathering in Konthoujam, Imphal West, Singh criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies for failing to maintain peace despite having a majority in the 60-member assembly with over 50 MLAs.
Singh highlighted that although the BJP, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership at the national level, holds a clear majority, it has not effectively governed Manipur. He accused them of merely acting as spectators amidst ongoing conflicts in the state. The former CM emphasized the necessity of strengthening the Congress to achieve a peaceful administration in both India and Manipur.
He also criticized the Prime Minister for not addressing the ethnic conflicts directly, pointing out that Modi chose to visit neighboring states instead. Singh accused the BJP of manipulating constitutional principles and alleged that despite having the numbers to form a government after N Biren Singh’s resignation as Chief Minister, the BJP’s inaction violates constitutional rights.
Singh argued that the BJP’s majority mindset poses a threat to constitutional integrity, hinting they would alter it if possible. He underscored that the situation in Manipur contradicts India’s global reputation as a democratic nation.
Singh’s remarks come in the wake of continuing unrest in the region and aim to rally support for the Congress, which he believes is essential for restoring order and democratic governance in Manipur.
