Empowering Legacy: Maharashtra’s Determined Quest in Paris for UNESCO Heritage Recognition of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Majestic Forts
A high-level delegation led by Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs Minister, Ashish Shelar, is currently in Paris seeking UNESCO World Heritage status for 12 forts associated with the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Maharashtra government has put forth a proposal under the theme “Maratha Military Landscape of India,” hoping to include these historically seminal forts in the prestigious World Heritage list.
The forts listed in the proposal are Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohagad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, Khanderi, and the Jinji fort situated in Tamil Nadu. These forts are not only fortified marvels of architecture but also carry immense historical significance due to their association with the legendary valor of Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha Empire.
To underscore the cultural and historical value of these forts, the delegation will undertake comprehensive technical and diplomatic presentations in Paris until February 26. Their objective is to convincingly articulate the historical and architectural prominence of these structures to UNESCO authorities.
The delegation aims to highlight how these forts exemplify the distinctive military landscape of the Maratha Empire, serving both as epicenters of defense and as administrative hubs. A successful inscription on the World Heritage list would not only bolster Maharashtra’s cultural tourism but also ensure international recognition and preservation of these vital historical sites.
The effort reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to preserving and showcasing its rich heritage as a testament to its historical narrative and architectural splendor. By advocating for UNESCO recognition, the state hopes to secure a place on the global stage for these forts, ensuring their legacy is preserved for future generations. As the delegation makes its case in Paris, there remains anticipation of a favorable outcome for this cultural initiative, enhancing both the local and international appreciation of India’s diverse heritage.
