Breaking Through Barriers: Exciting New Dialogue Between Centre and NSCN-IM on the Horizon
Dimapur: The longstanding Naga political issue is set for renewed discussions as the Centre and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) agree to resume formal talks. This development follows recent meetings held by officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, including A.K. Mishra, Advisor for the North East, with NSCN-IM leaders in Dimapur. The NSCN-IM delegation was led by General Secretary and chief negotiator Thuingaleng Muivah.
In a parallel effort, Mishra also consulted with the Working Committee of the Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs), an alliance of seven Naga groups that established an “Agreed Position” with the government in 2017. The last official negotiation between the government and the NSCN-IM was in October 2022.
The NSCN-IM recently underscored the importance of honoring Naga history, promising reciprocated respect. During their 46th raising day celebration, the group highlighted significant historical milestones, referencing a 2002 meeting in Amsterdam and the 2015 Framework Agreement signed in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The NSCN-IM has been in dialogue with the government since the 1997 ceasefire and the notable 2015 Framework Agreement. Talks with the NNPGs began in 2017. Key issues hindering progress include the NSCN-IM’s aspirations for a separate Naga flag and constitution, as well as the integration of Naga-populated regions across various Northeastern states and Myanmar.
These ongoing negotiations are pivotal in addressing the demands and aspirations of the Naga people, with the aim of achieving a lasting resolution to this decades-old conflict. The resumption of formal talks signals a hopeful development in a region long marked by complex political dynamics.
