Emotional Journey: Pakistani Actress Who Starred in 150 Films Over 60 Years, Divorced and Reinvented Herself in India, Finds Solace in Her Final Days
Renowned for her iconic roles in Hindi cinema, Manorama, born Erin Issac in Lahore, Pakistan, on August 16, 1926, graced the silver screen for six decades starring in over 150 films. Emerging as a child artist in 1941’s ‘Khazanchi’, she found fame in Lahore before relocating to Mumbai post-Partition. Here, her career flourished as she played notable roles, especially as a mother or a villain, such as in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’, ‘Do Kaliyan’, and ‘Karvan’.
Possessing an Irish mother and an Indian Christian father, Manorama was drawn to music and dance from an early age. A school performance caught the eye of a producer, who helped launch her acting career despite her father’s initial resistance. She married actor-turned-producer Rajan Haksar, though the marriage eventually ended in divorce.
Post-divorce, Manorama transitioned from films like ‘Ghar Ki Izzat’ and ‘Lachchi’ to memorable roles in television, including the series ‘Dastak’ with Shah Rukh Khan and ‘Kutumb’, where she portrayed Hiten Tejwani’s grandmother. She also appeared in notable TV projects by Balaji Telefilms such as ‘Kashti’ and ‘Kundli’. Her last film role was in Deepa Mehta’s ‘Water’ (2005), a performance highly praised by Hollywood critics.
Manorama suffered a stroke in 2007, leading to complications that affected her speech and appearance. She passed away on February 15, 2008, leaving behind a legacy of diverse and impactful roles. She is remembered particularly for her expressive portrayals of strong, often tyrannical, female characters. Her daughter, Rita Haksar, ventured briefly into acting before settling abroad. Manorama’s enduring impact on Hindi cinema remains a testament to her versatile talent and dedication to the craft.
