Shocking Wildlife Crime: Three Bears ‘Illegally’ Smuggled from Nagaland to Chattisgarh – Justice Needed!
Guwahati, Assam: Suspicious Bear Transport Intercepted by Locals
On Monday night, residents in Sonapur, near Guwahati, flagged down a truck with a Chhattisgarh registration number traveling on National Highway 37, uncovering three bears being transported under suspicious circumstances. The truck’s occupants claimed they were moving the bears from Nagaland to Chhattisgarh. However, when locals requested documentation for the transport, the staff refused to provide any and prevented photographs from being taken, citing orders from their "bosses."
One local resident reported, "They refused to show any documents and quickly drove away towards Guwahati." Another witness, Mukul Dutta, a businessman, remarked that the truck had three staff members who admitted to previous animal transports, including deer from Nagaland.
This incident has intensified scrutiny and concern regarding the legality of animal transportation through Assam, particularly in light of recent events where 20 elephants were relocated from Arunachal Pradesh to Reliance’s Vantara in Gujarat. Queries regarding whether the bears were being ferried legally or were victims of illegal trafficking remain unanswered, as forest department officials in Assam were not available for comment.
The interception of the bears underscores the ongoing issues surrounding wildlife transportation in the region, raising questions about regulatory oversight and the protection of wildlife in Assam and its neighboring areas.
