Shocking Allegations: Meghalaya BJP Urges Central Probe into Assam CM’s Fake Degree Claims Against USTM!
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Meghalaya, part of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, has called for the Centre’s intervention following serious accusations made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against the University of Science and Technology of Meghalaya (USTM). On February 17, Sarma accused USTM, which operates a sizable hospital and medical college near the Assam-Meghalaya border, of issuing fake certificates and degrees.
BJP general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna described the allegations as severe, meriting an impartial investigation. He stressed that any hint of fraudulent degrees could severely impact students’ futures, necessitating government efforts to uncover the truth. Pohshna highlighted that the accusations from Assam’s Chief Minister are significant and argue that an independent judicial inquiry is warranted, especially given Assam’s threat to derecognize USTM degrees, which could adversely affect students’ prospects.
Pohshna underscored the urgency for an investigation to either validate the allegations and take legal action or reassure students if the accusations are unfounded. This follows a previous accusation from Sarma last year, where he alleged USTM of orchestrating a “flood jihad” against Guwahati, a claim the university denied.
The BJP in Meghalaya, with two Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), remains allied with the National People’s Party (NPP) headed by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, which dominates the 60-member House with 32 MLAs.
This issue demands immediate attention to uphold the integrity of educational qualifications and protect the future of numerous students potentially impacted by these serious allegations.
