Manipur Triumph: Tribal Body Halts Mass Rally at Centre’s Urgent Request
Imphal, February 18 (IANS): The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), representing the Kuki-Zo tribals in Manipur, has cancelled its planned mass rally scheduled for Tuesday at the request of the Central government. Originally, the KZC intended to hold rallies across six districts—Pherzawl, Tengnoupal, Jiribam, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Chandel—where Kuki-Zo communities predominate. The rallies were aimed at demanding swift political solutions to the ongoing ethnic crisis and the establishment of a separate administration or Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo people.
KZC leadership, including Chairman Henlianthang Thanglet and General Secretary Rev. V.L. Nghakthang, stated that the Centre’s request prompted an emergency meeting. Following serious deliberations, the decision was made to cancel the rally, citing future political strategies as the reason for their compliance. The Council urged community members to understand and support this decision, viewing it as a strategic pause to facilitate future political endeavors.
The KZC has endorsed the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, expressing optimism that it could lead to political resolutions and harmonious coexistence among Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Hmar communities. This sentiment is echoed by indigenous tribal organizations, including the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) and Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), supporting government measures toward stability.
Recent political turbulence followed Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9. Since then, numerous discussions led by Sambit Patra, BJP’s northeast-in-charge, have sought a consensus on selecting a new Chief Minister. However, the inability to reach an agreement led the Governor to advise the President to implement President’s Rule, placing the Assembly under suspended animation. This decision holds potential for reactivation at the President’s discretion, keeping alive hopes for political settlements and peace.
