Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava Triumphantly Overpowers Captain America at the Indian Box Office: A Blockbuster Victory!
In a notable box office achievement, Vicky Kaushal’s historical epic “Chhaava” triumphed over Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” in India. Within just three days, “Chhaava,” which chronicles the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, amassed an impressive Rs 116.5 crore, while the Marvel film lagged behind with a modest Rs 12.5 crore, only Rs 4.36 crore of which came from its Hindi version. This significant win not only underscores the surging dominance of Bollywood over Hollywood in India but also solidifies Vicky Kaushal’s standing as a formidable force in the film industry.
Globally, “Captain America: Brave New World,” featuring Anthony Mackie’s debut as the iconic superhero role, garnered a respectable opening of $192.4 million. However, it didn’t quite measure up to previous Marvel hits like “Thor: Love and Thunder” ($303.2 million), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($331.3 million), and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” ($449.4 million), though it did outperform “Eternals,” which opened at $162 million.
In India, audiences favored the rich, historical narrative and a powerful performance by Kaushal, resulting in packed theatres and enthusiastic receptions. The film, also starring Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, quickly emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood release of 2025, even surpassing “Sky Force,” which earned ₹112 crore. Directed by Laxman Utekar, marking another collaboration between him and Kaushal after “Zara Hatke Zara Bachke,” “Chhaava” is poised to surpass “Raazi” in box office records. Meanwhile, despite featuring notable actors like Harrison Ford, Shira Haas, Tim Blake Nelson, and Sebastian Stan, “Captain America” will have to accept a more subdued performance in the Indian market.
