Passionate Stand: ZoRO & Aizawl Students Unite Against Controversial FMR Scrapping | Guwahati News
Aizawl’s Zo Reunification Organisation (ZoRO) and the Joint Hnampual Students’ Organisation (JHSO), which include various Mizo sub-tribe student associations, have collectively resolved to oppose the abolition of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the proposed India-Myanmar border fencing. According to ZoRO’s general secretary L Ramdinliana Renthlei, these measures, introduced by the central government, could significantly undermine the unity and integrity of ethnic Mizos residing across India and Myanmar.
Renthlei voiced concerns that the proposed border fencing would sever the connections of the Mizo community living on either side, leading not only to cultural and social fragmentation but also to substantial losses in land and livelihood. The fencing, he implied, threatens the vital rice and vegetable cultivation areas of those living on the Indian side, exacerbating economic hardships.
Critics of the initiative argue that these governmental actions are perceived strategies aimed at marginalizing the ‘Zofate’ or ethnic Mizos, prompting Renthlei to call for solidarity among civil societies and organizations to defend indigenous people’s rights as outlined by the United Nations.
ZoRO is dedicated to fostering unity among ethnic Mizos across India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, striving towards a consolidated administrative framework. The Joint Hnampual Students’ Organisation is a coalition comprising the Mara Students’ Organisation, Lai Students’ Association, Ranglong Students’ Union, Siamsinpawlpi, Pang Zirlai Pawl, Mizoram Bawm Student’s Association, and Hmar Students’ Association. This unified stance underscores the commitment to protecting the cultural and economic interests of the Mizo community in the face of what they view as divisive government strategies.
