Triumph Over Flames: Forest Fire in Kohima’s Kigwema Heroically Contained
In Kohima, Nagaland, a significant forest fire erupted in the Kigwema village, rapidly spreading due to strong winds and dry conditions. The blaze began around 10:30 am near Japfü Christian College and quickly advanced towards Mt Shürho. Local youth volunteers, farmers, and village authorities collaborated to suppress the fire, cutting through jungle patches to prevent its spread. Despite challenging conditions and poor road connectivity which hampered professional firefighting efforts, these community members managed to bring the fire largely under control. By Thursday night, only a few isolated flames lingered, with ongoing efforts to completely extinguish them. The fire’s origin remains uncertain, though initial reports suggest it might have stemmed from unattended farm-clearing fires near Mt Kipfüzha. This incident underscores both the vulnerabilities to fire in such environments and the resilience of local communities in addressing unexpected challenges.
