Major Upgrades Underway for NH-10 in Sikkim: MP Indra Hang Subba
GANGTOK: The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is executing numerous upgrades on NH-10 to enhance traffic flow between Sikkim and Siliguri, as confirmed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha on February 13, in response to questions from Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba, the minister detailed five significant initiatives aimed at fortifying this crucial route.
The upgrades include widening the road to four or six lanes from Balason Bridge (Siliguri) to Sevoke Army Cantonment, creating a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the four-laning of the stretch from Sevoke Army Cantonment to Coronation Bridge, and setting up Project Management Consultancy for broadening the road to two lanes with paved shoulders from Sevoke to Rangpo. Further, a DPR is being prepared for similar two-lane expansions with paved shoulders from Rangpo to Ranipool, and a Performance-Based Maintenance Contract is in place from Ranipool to Gangtok. These efforts are spearheaded by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), a central agency responsible for maintaining NH-10 from Sevoke to Gangtok.
MP Indra Hang Subba expressed gratitude towards the Union Government and Road Transport & Highways Ministry, emphasizing that enhancing road connectivity is vital for Sikkim’s development, particularly in the tourism and infrastructural sectors. He credited the proactive initiatives to the strong rapport between Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay and the central leadership, noting that upon completion, these projects will significantly benefit the state.
Currently, Sikkim has approximately 709 km of national highways, and the ongoing developments aim to boost the connectivity and economic progress of the region, positioning Sikkim for enhanced prosperity and growth.
