In eastern Congo, the city of Bukavu finds itself in lockdown following a night punctuated by heavy gunfire as M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, advance further into the region. Last month, these rebels seized Goma and have since claimed control over Kavumu airport on the city’s outskirts. The United Nations reports that government forces have withdrawn from key positions during the escalating conflict, leading to the displacement of approximately 350,000 people.
The ongoing rebellion has resulted in more than 2,000 deaths, with accusations from Congo’s government against the rebels for violating existing ceasefire agreements. M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka announced on social media platform X that the seizure of Kavumu airport was a strategic move to neutralize what they described as a threat at its source. The actions of the rebels have caused alarm throughout South Kivu province, pushing Bukavu residents to flee to neighboring towns and prepare for further unrest by stocking up on essential supplies.
The situation has further deteriorated with extensive shelling and looting leading to the destruction of 70,000 emergency shelters, according to the UN refugee agency. This leaves many of the displaced civilians without adequate housing options during this turbulent period.
