Justice Sought: Massive 1,700-Page Chargesheet Filed Against 21 in Shocking Vanraj Andekar Murder Case
The Pune city police have filed a 1,700-page charge sheet against 21 individuals in connection with the murder of Vanraj Andekar, a former Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) corporator. Vanraj, aged 40, was fatally shot and attacked with sharp weapons on September 1 near his home in Nana Peth, Pune. The murder, orchestrated by a group of more than a dozen people, was captured on CCTV.
The investigation spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police Ganesh Ingle led to the arrest of 21 suspects, including Vanraj’s sister Sanjivani Komkar and her husband, Jayant Komkar. They, along with former Andekar gang member-turned-rival Somnath Gaikwad, are accused of plotting the murder following a family dispute related to the demolition of a shop allegedly prompted by Vanraj during his tenure as a corporator.
Two minors were also apprehended for their alleged roles, and the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) has been invoked against all accused. The police recovered eight country-made firearms, 13 live cartridges, seven sharp weapons, and multiple vehicles allegedly used in the crime. They revealed that the firearms were procured from Madhya Pradesh, with assistance from suspect Abhishek alias Aba Narayan Khond.
The case is heavily built on evidence, including CCTV footage from the crime scene, mobile phone records, and voice samples of the accused. The charge sheet also encapsulates the criminal histories of those involved and accounts from 39 witnesses. Vanraj’s father, Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar, filed the FIR at Samarth police station, laying the groundwork for what the police claim was an elaborate conspiracy stemming from ongoing family conflicts. A summary charge sheet is expected to complement the extensive document filed in court.
