Exciting Growth: Centre Unveils Transformative Rs 10,000 Crore Urea Plant in Namrup, Assam, Creating 1,950 Jobs
The Centre has greenlit a new urea plant in Namrup, Assam, with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore, expected to begin operations in the next three and a half years. Revealed by Rajat Kumar Mishra, Secretary of the Department of Fertilizers, this acclaimed initiative is designed to produce 12.70 lakh tonnes of urea, notably catering to the fertilizer needs of Northeast and Eastern India. The establishment of this plant was highlighted by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Budget for 2025-2026, underscoring its significant role within the regional economic framework.
According to Mishra, the Namrup plant will utilize a mix of local and imported natural gas for the production of urea, and might also diversify into manufacturing nano and related products. The development is poised to generate approximately 1,950 direct and indirect jobs, thereby boosting local employment.
The project is poised to contribute towards reducing India’s dependency on imported fertilizers. With the inclusion of the Namrup plant’s capacity, the nation’s total urea production is set to climb to 335 lakh tonnes, fulfilling 75-80% of the domestic consumption. Mishra mentioned possibilities of exporting surplus urea to neighboring nations if the need arises.
The Namrup project represents a strategic endeavor in balancing nitrogenous fertilizer use nationwide, promoting sustainable agriculture practices. Anticipated to be a significant economic catalyst in the region, this plant not only addresses local fertilizer demands but also symbolically epitomizes India’s strategic shift towards self-reliance in key industrial sectors.
In conclusion, amid applause from both industry insiders and local stakeholders, the upcoming urea plant in Namrup is a testament to the Centre’s commitment to bolstering local economies, enhancing self-sufficiency in fertilizer production, and fostering sustainable agricultural growth.
