The North Eastern Railway Men’s Congress (NERMC), a labor union from the North East zone, has accused the rail administration of unfair practices in allocating office space necessary for its daily operations. Despite being the sole union to secure victory in the Secret Ballot Election held on December 12, 2024, the NERMC claims it has yet to receive any office accommodation for conducting employee-related activities and facilitating the Participation of Railway Employees in Management (PREM).
In a formal communication to the general manager, NERMC General Secretary Abdul Sheikh expressed frustration over the two-month delay in receiving office allotment. The union has reportedly made numerous requests to the administration, which have yet to be addressed.
Adding to their grievances, Sheikh noted that previously-recognized unions that did not succeed in the latest elections are retaining their office spaces without intervention from the rail authorities. Sheikh conveyed that the general manager’s office had assured the union that it would receive office keys by February 10, but this promise remains unfulfilled. Consequently, the union is performing its activities outdoors.
In response to the ongoing issue, the NERMC has announced plans to undertake a day-long strike and fast to advocate for their rights. Sheikh revealed that members intend to stage a fast outside the general manager’s office and may escalate the protest to Rail Bhawan in Delhi if their demands remain unmet.
This situation underscores the union’s struggle for adequate representation and operational facilities amidst allegations of administrative neglect. The unfolding protest shows the NERMC’s commitment to securing fair treatment and necessary resources for its members.
