Urgent: Fuji TV Faces Desperate Battle to Attract Sponsors for Spring Season
According to a report by the weekly magazine Shūkan Gendai, Fuji TV is encountering significant challenges in securing sponsors for its upcoming spring programming season. The broadcaster is facing a dire situation where its program schedule from April onwards is virtually empty due to the lack of sponsorship interest. As an anonymous Fuji TV staff member noted, without sponsor funding, it’s uncertain how much budget can be allocated towards new programs, essentially causing operations to stall.
The sponsorship crisis follows allegations involving Masahiro Nakai, a former SMAP member, reportedly engaged in nonconsensual activities in June 2023, which led to a substantial out-of-court settlement of 90 million yen (approximately US$580,000). Compounding the issue, involvement of Fuji TV staff was initially reported, although later details revealed the woman was not directly invited by any Fuji TV official, contradicting earlier reports. These revelations resulted in the resignations of Fuji TV president Koichi Minato and Fuji Media Holdings Inc. chairman Shuji Kano, which were intended to stabilize the situation but inadvertently intensified the loss of sponsors.
Since the revelations, Fuji TV has reportedly lost over 80 corporate sponsors, leading to replacement of commercial slots with public service announcements by AC Japan. Although sponsors don’t receive refunds for these replacements, Fuji TV opted not to charge replacement fees until January and is currently allowing cancellations through March. The financial repercussions are severe, with an anticipated loss of 23.3 billion yen (over US$150 million) within three months.
The sponsorship shortfall has also begun affecting Fuji TV’s anime programming. Popular shows like Chibi Maruko-chan and Sazae-san have aired without sponsors recently, prompting further concerns. ANN’s team in Japan is investigating if other animated programs have faced similar issues.
