Peren, February 11 (MExN): The 12th Nagaland Inter-District Veteran Football Tournament was officially launched at Mhainamtsi Village Ground, Jalukie, under the auspices of the Peren District Veteran Football Association (PDVFA). The tournament, spanning from February 11 to February 14, witnessed the spirited participation of six district teams. The opening match saw Mokokchung triumph over Mon with a decisive 2-0 victory, setting the stage for an exciting series of matches.
S Keoshu Yimkhiung, Advisor to Youth Resources & Sports in Nagaland, was present to encourage the veteran athletes. In his address, he emphasized the importance of playing not just for the sake of victory but as a means of maintaining physical fitness and well-being. He urged players to inspire and mentor younger generations, promoting a love for sports among youth in their respective districts. Yimkhiung also highlighted the significance of teamwork and encouraged the players to engage in training activities that would nurture under-age talents.
The President of the Nagaland Veteran Football Association (NVFA), K Kire (DGP Retd), echoed these sentiments, underscoring the dual purpose of the tournament: to promote fitness among veteran players and to foster a football culture among younger individuals. Acknowledging the participation of only six teams this year, he expressed optimism that future editions would attract greater engagement.
The inauguration was more than just about sports; it celebrated cultural richness with performances, including a theme song by singer and songwriter Namkamlak and traditional dances. PDVFA Convenor Arup Zeliang extended a warm welcome to all attendees and participants, epitomizing the spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. As the tournament progresses, players and audiences alike anticipate thrilling matches and a successful conclusion on February 14.
