Agartala, 11th February 2025: Tripura Faces Severe Floods; Relief Efforts Intensified

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha announced ongoing coordination with the Central government to secure post-flood relief funds for Tripura, following recent devastating floods that have not been seen since August 2024. In a Flood Relief and Management Programme at Rabindra Bhavan, Agartala, Dr. Saha stressed the government’s commitment to aiding citizens during crises.

Dr. Saha praised the efforts of local organization Abhay Mission, which, along with its affiliates, has supported around 5,600 flood-affected families. He commended the collaboration of various entities, including the Air Force and disaster response forces, in managing the situation. Contributions poured into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund from diverse sections of society, fostering a united front against the calamity.

The floods impacted all but the Juri River, with the water levels of six rivers reaching their maximum. Among the state’s eight districts, Gomati, South, and Sepahijala faced the brunt of the disaster. Approximately 17 lakh people were affected, with 4 lakh moved to safer locations and 889 relief camps established. Sadly, 38 lives were lost, and 58,687 houses were damaged. The total damage is estimated at Rs 15,000 crore.

Dr. Saha confirmed discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister for financial aid. A central ministerial team has inspected the damage to expedite support. Additionally, Rs 564 crore from the state budget has been allocated for disaster management, emphasizing quick and efficient response actions by the state government.

Dr. Saha reiterated the government’s dedication to assisting citizens in distress, highlighting the importance of community solidarity during such times. The event was attended by West Tripura’s District Magistrate, Dr. Vishal Kumar, Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manik Lal Das, and other officials.
