Transformative Rs 85 Crore GLOF Mitigation Project Approved: Safeguarding Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim with Hope and Resilience
The Centre has greenlit the National Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Risk Mitigation Project (NGRMP) to counter glacial lake outburst flood risks in Arunachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh. According to Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, the project entails a financial commitment of Rs 150 crore. The northeastern states are allocated Rs 85 crore, with Arunachal Pradesh receiving Rs 45 crore and Sikkim Rs 40 crore.
Central funds from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF) amount to Rs 135 crore, contributing Rs 40.50 crore to Arunachal and Rs 36 crore to Sikkim. The four states are required to contribute Rs 15 crore from their resources, with Arunachal and Sikkim responsible for Rs 4.50 crore and Rs 4 crore, respectively.
Uttarakhand has a project outlay of Rs 30 crore, with Rs 27 crore from the Central NDMF, and must add Rs 3 crore itself. Himachal Pradesh is approved for a Rs 35 crore outlay, receives Rs 31.50 crore from the NDMF, and will supplement Rs 3.50 crore. Initial instalments of Rs 1.83 crore to Arunachal Pradesh and Rs 8.35 crore to Sikkim were distributed on January 17.
The NGRMP aims to mitigate life-threatening and economically damaging effects of GLOF events through enhanced early warning and monitoring systems, particularly in highly vulnerable areas. The initiative seeks to bolster last-mile connectivity in monitoring efforts to prevent loss of life and protect critical infrastructure.
