Nirmala Sitharaman’s Inspiring Tribute: Madhubani Art Saree Honors Padma Awardee Dulari Devi on Budget Day
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman honored the cultural heritage of Madhubani art on Budget Day by wearing a saree featuring traditional artistry. This saree was a special gift from Dulari Devi, a Padma Shri awardee and revered Mithila artist from Bihar.
Sitharaman’s engagement with the artist occurred during her visit to Madhubani for a credit outreach program at the Mithila Art Institute. There, she had an insightful discussion about the legacy of Madhubani art with Dulari Devi. Deeply appreciating Devi’s dedication and craftsmanship, the Finance Minister received an intricately designed saree from the artist, who requested that she wear it during the Union Budget presentation.
Honoring this request, Sitharaman donned the saree while delivering her Budget speech, highlighting her respect for India’s traditional art forms. This gesture not only showcased the exceptional skills of artisans like Dulari Devi but also reinforced the government’s commitment to promoting and preserving indigenous crafts.
Dulari Devi, awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for her significant contributions to Madhubani art, has dedicated her life to sustaining the Mithila painting tradition. Her creations beautifully narrate tales of rural India, mythology, and nature, earning her esteemed recognition in the realm of Indian folk art.
Sitharaman’s decision to wear the saree on such a prominent occasion is regarded as a symbolic tribute to India’s diverse artistic heritage and an endorsement of empowering traditional artisans. By highlighting Madhubani art on a national stage, the Finance Minister has further fostered appreciation and recognition of India’s indigenous art forms, ensuring that the rich cultural legacies like that of Mithila painting gain the attention and support they deserve.
