Urgent Call to Action: State BJP Demands Immediate ILP Implementation in Sikkim to Protect Local Interests
The State BJP in Sikkim has urged the SKM government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to better manage and regulate the entry of external manpower into the state. While the party welcomed the government’s recent move to introduce a temporary work system at the Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) level, BJP executive Sangay Gyatso Bhutia emphasized that this measure is only a short-term solution. In a statement on Wednesday, Bhutia pointed out that existing laws, including the Sikkim Tenants and Domestic and Professional Compulsory Verification Act of 2008 and the Sikkim Labour (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act of 2021, have not effectively curbed illegal entry into the state.
Bhutia highlighted the continued influx of outsiders as a significant concern, citing its impact on Sikkim’s unique demographic and cultural identity. The strain on local resources and the socio-cultural fabric, coupled with a declining indigenous population due to low fertility rates, necessitate immediate action.
“The temporary measures are not sufficient,” Bhutia stated, advocating for the ILP, which has seen success in other Northeastern states. He described the ILP as a robust mechanism to safeguard indigenous populations and their rights, insisting that its implementation in Sikkim is both necessary and a long-term solution to the issues arising from illegal immigration.
Furthermore, Bhutia affirmed the BJP’s commitment to supporting initiatives that protect Sikkim’s special constitutional status under Article 371F. He urged the state government to take decisive steps to ensure Sikkim’s sustainable growth while preserving its people and cultural integrity. The call for the ILP reflects a broader effort to secure the future of the state and safeguard the interests of its indigenous communities, making the need for action more urgent than ever.
