Nagaland’s Alarming School Enrollment Gap: ASER 2024 Findings

Dimapur | January 28 – The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 reveals concerning statistics about the school enrollment of boys aged 15-16 in rural Nagaland. A significant 17.9% of boys in this age group are not in school, a figure that starkly contrasts with the national average of 7.7%. This highlights a severe disparity in educational access for older boys in the region, potentially indicating systemic challenges in retaining male students beyond primary education.

The Right to Education Act of 2009, which mandates free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14, appears not to have effectively curbed dropout rates among older boys in Nagaland. Over a decade, from 2014 to 2024, these high out-of-school rates have persisted, calling for urgent, targeted interventions. Despite government efforts, the figures point to a critical issue that continues to hinder educational progress for boys in the state.

Moreover, the survey illuminates a stark gender disparity. While girls aged 15-16 exhibit a considerably lower out-of-school rate of 8%, boys are over twice as likely to be unenrolled. This gender gap emphasizes the urgent need for strategies to engage male students and encourage their continued education.

The persistence of these high dropout rates over the years suggests deep-rooted barriers that may include socio-economic factors, cultural attitudes towards education, or inadequate infrastructure. It underscores the necessity for state and local governments, along with community leaders, to prioritize educational reforms that cater specifically to the needs of older boys.

The ASER 2024 findings must serve as a call to action for stakeholders at all levels to address these disparities and ensure that every child, regardless of gender, has equitable access to education and the opportunities it provides. Addressing this issue is vital for the region’s socio-economic development and the betterment of future generations.
