Shocking Surge: Pune’s Guillain-Barré Syndrome Cases Hit 101 – A Wake-Up Call for India
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases have surged past 100 in Pune, with a fatality reported from Solapur, possibly linked to Pune. Maharashtra’s health department is probing 18 additional suspected cases across Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, rural Pune, and nearby districts. Currently, 101 people are receiving hospital treatment, with 16 on ventilators. The patient demographic includes 68 males and 33 females across various age groups, with the youngest being under nine years old.
A central health team is set to visit Pune on Monday to assess the situation. Among the patients, 81 are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 14 from Pimpri Chinchwad, and 6 from other districts. Cases emerged predominantly in Sinhagad Road, Khadakwasla, Dhayari, Kirkatwadi, and adjacent areas.
Suspicions of contamination have led to the collection of water samples from various parts of Pune for chemical and biological analysis. Initially, 23 blood samples returned negative results for dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. However, nine of 11 stool samples from GBS patients tested positive for norovirus, with three also positive for Campylobacter Jejuni infection.
As the outbreak unfolds, timely interventions and in-depth investigations are imperative to curtail further spread.
