"Incredible Reunion: Majestic Male Elephant Spotted at Namdapha National Park After 12 Years"
In a landmark moment for wildlife conservation, Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh has documented the first adult male elephant sighting in 12 years. This remarkable event occurred on January 13, 2025, captured by a strategically placed camera trap, underscoring the park’s relentless dedication to biodiversity preservation.
The sighting is particularly significant given the findings of the 2022 Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) report, which indicated a worrying absence of elephants in the park. The report attributed this decline to hunting by local tribes, possibly driven by a demand for elephants in neighboring countries.
Though elephants are known to traverse the park during the monsoon season, the area’s rugged terrain and challenging weather conditions have complicated effective monitoring. Despite these obstacles, the discovery was made possible through the persistent efforts of a team led by V. K. Jawal, Chief Conservator of Forests & Field Director of Namdapha National Park & Tiger Reserve, and Biri Karba, Range Forest Officer of the Namdapha Wildlife Range and Research Wing.
The photograph of the majestic male elephant offers crucial insights into the species’ movement within the park, highlighting the urgent need for ongoing conservation measures. In response to this finding, park authorities have intensified patrols, especially in the vulnerable core boundary areas like the Kathan region in the northwest. This heightened vigilance aims to secure this critical migratory corridor for elephants, ensuring they can safely navigate through the park.
The successful documentation of this rare sighting is a testament to the park’s unwavering commitment to protecting its diverse ecosystem and offers a beacon of hope for the future of its wildlife, reinforcing the vital role of conservation initiatives in safeguarding endangered species.
