Historic Victory: Manipur Triumphs with First Gold in Men’s Triathlon at 38th National Games – Northeast News
Manipur achieved a significant milestone at the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, securing its first gold medal, thanks to the remarkable performance of Sarungbam Athouba Meitei in the men’s individual triathlon. Athouba emerged victorious with a commendable total time of 1:01:01, mastering the endurance challenges of swimming, cycling, and running. His performance breakdown included timings of 9:55 in swimming, 31:53 in cycling, and 18:09 in running, where he ranked second, first, and fourth, respectively. Despite his success, Athouba remarked, “I’m happy, but I don’t know why I’m not completely happy. I just want to keep practicing and improving.”
Bolstering Manipur’s medal tally, Telheiba Soram clinched the silver with a time of 1:02:10, while Maharashtra’s Parth Sachin Mirage completed the podium with a bronze at 1:02:14.
Manipur’s triathlon spirit extends to its female athletes, with representatives like Nongmaithem Nelshi Devi, Swety Nongmaithem, and Maibam Binita Chanu, who is serving as a reserve, competing in triathlon and duathlon events. Athouba and Telheiba are also scheduled to participate in the men’s and mixed relay duathlons, showcasing the state’s strong contingent of over 400 athletes participating across 19 sports disciplines.
In the women’s triathlon, Maharashtra showcased its dominance as Dolly Devidas Patil earned the gold, followed closely by her teammate, Mansi Vinod Mohite, who took silver. Madhya Pradesh’s Aadya Singh claimed the bronze. Dolly’s performance was a testament to her all-around talent, clocking in at 1:10:03 with split times of 10:35 for swimming, 35:51 for biking, and 20:37 for running, where she placed first in swimming and secured top-three finishes in biking and running.
This edition of the National Games highlights Manipur’s emerging athletic prowess, with athletes poised to make significant waves across the national sports arena.
