Unnerving Boom Sparks Panic in Guwahati During Republic Day Festivities | Heart-Stopping News
On Sunday, Republic Day celebrations in Guwahati were disrupted by a loud noise that sparked anxiety among residents. Authorities identified the source as a lorry parking area near the Brahmaputra vegetable market in Beharbari. Assam Police confirmed that there were no injuries or property damage, and the local police are investigating the incident. Some residents also reported hearing similar noises in Rehabari, but officials dismissed these claims as unsubstantiated.
In a separate incident, a suspicious unattended bag was found near the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Betkuchi, prompting a security response. Upon inspection by an anti-sabotage team, the bag was found to contain only clothes and ID cards, likely left behind accidentally. The police intend to return it to the owner after proper verification.
Amid these events, the proscribed group ULFA (I) claimed responsibility for “blasts” at two locations in an email to media outlets. They stated that the noise was intended to dissuade participation in future Independence and Republic Day events. The group claimed that IED blasts had been carried out in several areas, including Lalmati and Rehabari.
This event occurred amidst heightened security measures in Guwahati, reflecting ULFA (I)’s previous calls to boycott Republic Day celebrations. Last year, they claimed to have planted explosives at multiple sites across Assam, with authorities discovering bomb-like devices at ten locations, including four in Guwahati.
The incidents underline ongoing tensions and security challenges in the region, with authorities remaining vigilant against potential threats from separatist groups seeking to disrupt national festivities.
