Thrilling Triumph: East Khasi Hills Shines at the 6th Meghalaya Games’ Spectacular Conclusion
The 6th edition of Meghalaya Games concluded triumphantly at the Kiang Nangbah Football Stadium in Jowai, after a week of celebrating sports and unity. The event witnessed a record-breaking participation of over 3,500 athletes across 29 sports disciplines, marking the largest edition in its history.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony, joined by key figures such as Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, MSOA Working President John F. Kharshiing, and West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner B.S. Sohliya. This year’s games set a benchmark with the highest number of sports disciplines and the inclusion of seven para-athletes, showing a commitment to inclusivity and excellence.
East Khasi Hills dominated the medal tally with 149 gold, 105 silver, and 127 bronze, securing 381 medals. West Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi followed as first and second runners-up, respectively, highlighting the competitive spirit that permeated the games.
A distinctive feature of this edition was the integration of cultural elements like the state anthem and the presence of ‘U Kiang,’ the Clouded Leopard mascot, which captivated the audience. The theme song “Niom Beit Naphang” resonated throughout the events, enhancing the festive spirit.
The closing ceremony celebrated not only athletic prowess but also inspiring stories, such as traditional games participant An’ding Oka, cyclist Banshanlang Khyllait, and aspiring national footballer Sanfida Nongrum. Recognition was also given to Wallambok Lyngdoh, Head Coach of the Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association.
Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla highlighted the success as a result of the collective efforts of governmental and sports bodies under the MDA government’s focus on sports infrastructure and funding. Deputy Chief Minister Dhar commended the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Sports Minister Shakliar K. Warjri, emphasizing that Meghalaya is now poised to host the National Games. This growth was mirrored in the increase of disciplines from 14 in 2020 to 29 this year, with medalists now eligible for scholarships and cash prizes.
