Empowering Over 100 Villagers in WGH to Combat HEC: Inspiring Outreach Events Foster Hope and Change
Guwahati, Jan 26: In an innovative effort to tackle the pressing issue of human-elephant conflict (HEC), Aaranyak, a leading biodiversity conservation organisation, in collaboration with the British Asian Trust, has reached out to 124 community members in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district. Supported by the Darwin Initiative, the series of outreach events took place across the villages of Kalitapara, Borobhakata, Belguri, and Ampangdamgre.
This educational initiative seeks to empower local communities with knowledge on effective conflict mitigation strategies, promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants. Central to the campaign is “Gajah Kotha/Mongma Golpo” (elephant stories), a unique signature initiative aimed at sensitizing residents through informative IEC materials.
Aaranyak’s resolute team, including Nipul Chakma and Subash Ch Rabha, facilitated these interactions, assisted by the Rapid Response Unit members Bipin Rabha, Norway Rabha, and Latish Rabha, along with dedicated volunteer Jyotimoy Rabha. Beyond verbal engagement, the villages experiencing frequent HEC distress were equipped with torch lights, provided as practical mitigation tools. Each village received two torchlights in a bid to deter nocturnal elephant visits, often a source of significant conflict.
This initiative underscores the importance of community involvement in biodiversity conservation and seeks to forge a path of peaceful coexistence by equipping villagers with both knowledge and resources. Through interactive sessions and distribution of essential resources, Aaranyak and its partners are fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of elephants within these communities, embracing both culture and conservation.
This strategic approach not only addresses immediate HEC concerns but also lays the groundwork for sustainable environmental stewardship among local populations, reaffirming the critical role of education and collaboration in resolving ecological conflicts.
