Shocking Viral Video Leads to Emotional Arrest of Six in Assam for Public Cattle Slaughter
Six individuals have been arrested in Assam following the release of a viral video depicting the public slaughter of cattle during a picnic, confirmed Director General of Police GP Singh. The arrests came after the video, which sparked widespread outrage, was circulated on social media. Many, particularly within Hindu communities where cows are revered, saw the act and its recording as a deliberate provocation meant to harm religious and cultural sentiments.
In a statement on social media platform X, DGP Singh announced, “Reference viral video of cattle slaughter in a public place – Six accused persons featuring in the video have been arrested, and further lawful action is being taken by @GuwahatiPol @assampolice @CMOfficeAssam.”
The video’s release has put a spotlight on the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which prohibits illegal cattle slaughter and trade in the state. Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has advocated for strict enforcement of the Act, emphasizing its importance in maintaining communal harmony and respecting cultural values.
While the law aims to curb such incidents, this episode has raised questions about its effective enforcement and the motives of those who chose to share such incendiary content online. The controversy surrounding the video underscores the challenges authorities face in upholding existing statutes and addressing the broader societal issues reflected in such acts.
Additionally, another unrelated incident in Assam came to light involving the theft of Saanchi tree parts worth over Rs 2 lakh in Jorhat, which was captured on CCTV. This highlights ongoing concerns with law enforcement and the protection of valuable resources in the region.
