Mizoram’s Crime Crackdown: Over 3,000 Arrested in 15 Months Sparks Hope and Renewal
Between September 2023 and December 2024, the Mizoram Police carried out a significant crime crackdown, arresting 3,210 individuals. According to H. Ramthlengliana, DIG (Headquarters) and Chief Public Relation Officer, theft and burglary constituted 42% of these cases. On Mizoram Police’s 53rd Raising Day, it was highlighted that violations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS) accounted for 16%, and infringements of the Mizoram Liquor Prohibition (MLP) Act made up 14% of the arrests.
Detailed analysis showed that 24% of those arrested were habitual offenders, and 38% were identified as drug addicts. Of the total arrests, 96% were Indian nationals, with 92% from Mizoram. The remainder came from Assam, Manipur, and Tripura, while 4% were from Myanmar. The age group 18 to 40 years made up nearly 80% of the arrestees, with 50% in the 18 to 30-year bracket. Women accounted for 12.7% of those arrested.
Socio-economic profiling indicated that 61% of the accused were college dropouts, while only 6% had graduated. Employment patterns revealed 67.5% worked in casual, unskilled jobs, and 77.3% belonged to lower-income groups. This data suggests a link between economic instability and criminal activity.
In 2023 alone, 341 NDPS cases were registered, leading to 478 arrests, including 62 Myanmar nationals. The police seized large quantities of illegal drugs and confiscated 143 vehicles used for transporting these substances. Liquor-related offences led to 249 cases and 323 arrests, with significant alcohol seizures. Additionally, in the area of explosives, 17 cases were recorded, resulting in 27 arrests. The apprehended individuals included four foreign nationals, and the seizures consisted of substantial quantities of explosives, demonstrating the effective disruption of illegal operations in the area. This comprehensive police effort underscores the challenges of crime and socioeconomic issues in the region.
