Babysunday Marngar showcased an impressive performance by netting a hat-trick for Shillong Lajong FC in their decisive 6-1 victory over Nongthymmai SC during the OC Blue Shillong Premier League 2024. The match, held on January 20 at the SSA Stadium, Polo Ground, saw Lajong dominate the last first-leg clash for both teams.
The game started with Yohaan Benjamin providing an assist for Babysunday in the 20th minute, who then converted it with a header. Just two minutes later, Firstborn Roy Khongsti doubled the lead with another header following a swiftly executed corner. Yohaan then turned scorer in the 32nd minute, navigating a long pass to slot the ball past Nongthymmai’s goalkeeper, Akash Thapa.
Before halftime, Babysunday scored his second goal with a low shot from the left, evading Thapa’s reach, making it 4-0. Despite Nongthymmai’s three shots on target in the first half, Lajong’s goalkeeper, Siwel Rymbai, remained unchallenged.
Nongthymmai showed improvement after the break, with Donald Tariang reducing the deficit in the 52nd minute via a calm volley. Nonetheless, Lajong’s offense continued their spree, with Babysunday completing his hat-trick with another header in the 60th minute. The final blow came from Emanbha Marbaniang, who capitalized on teamwork from Yohaan, sealing Lajong’s commanding win at 6-1.
Concluding the first leg, Shillong Lajong FC amassed 22 points through seven victories, one draw, and one loss, firmly securing their position in the league. Meanwhile, Nongthymmai SC finds themselves stuck with just 7 points courtesy of two wins, one draw, and six defeats.
Looking ahead, the last match of the first leg will see reigning champions Mawlai SC face Sawmer SC on January 21 at 2:30 pm.
