A report by the World Health Organization and International Labour Organization, published in Environment International, indicates that in 2016, around 745,000 individuals died from stroke and ischemic heart disease due to long working hours—a 29% increase since 2000. Research from the National Institutes of Health further emphasizes that regularly working over 48 hours a week can lead to adverse health outcomes, such as cardiovascular diseases, strokes, and premature death.
Dr. Manish Bansal, Senior Director at Medanta, highlights that chronic exposure to stress from overworking elevates cortisol levels, increasing the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. WHO data suggests that working 55 or more hours weekly is linked to a 35% higher risk of stroke and a 17% higher risk of dying from ischemic heart disease compared to a standard 35-40 hour week. These heightened risks are attributed to prolonged stress, insufficient physical activity, and inadequate sleep.
Stress and lack of physical activity play crucial roles, as transitions from sedentary to moderately active lifestyles can significantly reduce cardiovascular risks. Hence, engaging in any form of physical activity is beneficial, though higher activity levels offer greater reductions in cardiovascular disease risks.
Moreover, an imbalance between work and personal life adversely affects mental health, heightening anxiety and depression risks, which in turn contribute to various physical health issues. These factors collectively threaten life expectancy, underscoring the necessity for both employers and employees to prioritize work-life balance. The evidence strongly calls for a cultural shift towards healthier work environments, balancing professional demands with personal well-being.
